Over The Top

FRANÇAIS

With no time to waste, you deftly climb over the parapet and begin running towards the stranded men. You hear the bullets whistling all around you and even feel them slapping the ground. Just then, one of the men in the party emerges from the crater and manages to carry another wounded man towards the trench.

– “There’s only one left alive!” he yells as he passes you by.

Seconds later, you jump inside the crater and land in three feet of water. Shaking yourself, you look around you and notice the bullet-ridden body of one of the men from your unit. Beside him, crouched with his arms over his head, is a young boy dressed in German clothing. The prisoner!

You wade towards the cowering youth, and motion for him to help you out of the muck. No sooner does he take your hand, than he slumps forward and falls into the water, instantly killed by a shell fragment.

To think you risked your life to bring one of the enemy back to your own lines! And to think that the enemy would kill one of their own men! But these thoughts are to be your last, as the shelling intensifies and inevitably zeroes in on your position.  A large explosion fills the crater and you are never heard from again.
