Over The Top
With no one to man the machine-gun, the rate of fire slackens somewhat, allowing dozens of Germans to breach the wire and infiltrate the trench.
Within the cramped confines of the trench, rifles are turned into clubs as men from both sides engage in bitter hand to hand fighting.
A thin, gaunt looking German jumps into the trench right next to you and is immediately bayonetted by one of your comrades. Two other Germans, in turn, descend upon him and strike him over the head wit a massive home-made club forged with metal spikes. You turn to meet this dangerous threat and are quickly able to fire a shot at close quarter. One of the Germans reels backwards, with both of his hands covering his bleeding face.
Just then, your gun jams and, before you can fix it, the other German in front of you sinks his bayonet deep inside your chest. As you fall to your knees, the last thing you see are the shadows of men locked in desperate struggle.
