Over The Top

FRANÇAIS

– “You!” exclaims Sergeant Wilkes, pointing to a frail and shaking young German, “Come here!”.

– “Why him, Sergeant?” asks George.

– “Look at him, shaking like a leaf. I don’t think he’ll give us any trouble going back.” the sergeant replies.

You grab the young German by the collar and push him out of the dugout. You peer left and right, up and down the trench, for any signs of activity, yet all is quiet.

A few seconds later, George and Sergeant Wilkes emerge from the dugout, with grenades in each hand.

– “What are those for, Sergeant?” you ask.

– “A going-away present.” he answers, “I don’t intend on having these devils firing at us the moment we’ve gone back over the top.”

In one, quick motion, the Sergeant and George pull the pins out, count to three, then throw them inside the dugout.

The four of you take to your feet and, seconds later, a series of shattering explosions destroys the dugout and its hapless occupants.

– “Quick lads!” shouts Sergeant Wilkes, “No time to waste! Let’s get out of here before all hell breaks loose!”

You swiftly climb over the parapet, sling your rifles behind your backs, then disappear into the night with your prisoner in tow.
