1914 Star
1917
Often called the “Mons Star”, the 1914 Star was awarded to all officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the British Imperial Forces, (including civilian medical practitioners, nursing sisters, nurses and others who were employed with military hospitals), serving in France or Belgium between 05 August 1914 and midnight of 22/23 November 1914.
Those who served under fire or were present on duty within range of the enemy mobile artillery were awarded a bar to wear on the ribbon of the star.
Almost 380,000 1914 Stars and approximately 145,000 bars were awarded. Of this number 160 were received by members of the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital who had entered the combat zone on 6 November 1914. Canadians who were serving in British units in the field of combat also received the medal.
