Royal Red Cross Class 1

1883

The Royal Red Cross (RRC) was instituted on 27 April 1883 to women serving as nurses in the British and Imperial forces for exceptional service in military and naval nursing. The medal was first issued in one class with gold trim and because of the expansion of the nursing services during the First World War, a second class known as the Associate Royal Red Cross (ARRC) with silver trim (ARRC) was introduced on 10 November 1915. Nursing Sisters of the Canadian Army Medical Corps were awarded both classes. Recipients were entitled to the post-nominal letters RRC or ARRC.
