Air Force Cross
1918
The Air Force Cross was also instituted on 3 June 1918 (two months after the amalgamation of the air services) and was awarded to an officer or Warrant Officer for an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty while flying, but not in operations against the enemy. Recipients were (are) entitled to the post-nominal letters AFC. The stripes on the ribbon were originally horizontal until changed to the diagonal in 1919.
