Albert Medal

Instituted by Royal Warrant on 8 March 1866, the Albert Medal was intended to recognise "daring and heroic actions performed by mariners and others in danger of perishing, by reason of wrecks and other perils of the sea". In 1877 the medal’s warrant as extended to cover "performed on land...in preventing accidents in mines, on railways, and at fires, and from other perils on the shore". The medal could be awarded to both members of the military and civilians. Recipients of the medal were entitled to use the post-nominal letters AM.
