Geoffrey Charles Gough was born in London, England, on 7 April 1887.
When Gough enlisted in the cavalry at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, on 23 September 1914, he stated that he worked as a packer. He had significant pre-war military experience, having served with the Royal Field Artillery, the Royal North-West Mounted Police, and the 19th Alberta Dragoons. After initial training in Canada, Gough sailed to England with the First Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 3 October 1914 and pursued his training with the Contingent on Salisbury Plain.
Gough arrived in France with the Divisional Cavalry in early April 1915. He returned to England for officer training in cadet school on 14 June 1915. In August, he joined the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion (Western Ontario), Canadian Expeditionary Force in France and was promoted to lieutenant.
Gough received a head injury from shell fire on 16 August 1917, during the Battle of Hill 70. He died from his wounds at the Main Dressing Station, No. 1 Field Ambulance, in France, on 17 August.
On 18 August 1917, the 1st Battalion attended Gough’s funeral at what was to become Maple Leaf Cemetery, in Ypres, Belgium, where Gough is buried.
