Martin James Murphy was born in Southport (some documents say Wigan), England, on 2 January 1885. He was the son of James and Mary Murphy. His father was an assurance collector. Murphy immigrated to Canada in 1905 and settled in Battleford, Saskatchewan.
He stated that he was a motorman when he enlisted in the 50th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Calgary) in Edmonton, Alberta, on 18 January 1915. He was later transferred to the 4th Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Murphy was awarded the Military Medal on 22 February 1918. No reason was provided when the award was announced. He died at No. 16 General Hospital in Le Tréport, France, on 18 September 1918 from gunshot wounds to the legs and right thigh. He received those wounds during the Hundred Days Offensive.
Martin James Murphy is buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Tréport, France.
