Ernest Pifher was born in Simcoe County, Ontario, on 17 May 1894.

A clerk, Pifher enlisted in the Canadian Engineers in Kingston, Ontario, on 14 February 1916. He died on 16 October 1916 at 2/1 South Midland Casualty Clearing Station Special Hospital from wounds he received during the Battle of the Somme.

Ernest Pifher is buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, in France.
