Charles Henry Staples was born in Port Hope, Ontario, on 22 July 1892. He was the son of Joseph Henry and Annie Lucinda Staples.
A butcher, Staples enlisted in the 136th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Durham), Canadian Expeditionary Force, in his hometown on 27 March 1916. He was later transferred to the 87th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards).
Staples was killed in action in the early evening of 26 July 1918, when the Germans shelled the trenches the 87th Battalion was occupying outside Oppy, France.
Charles Henry Staples is buried in Anzin-St. Aubin British Cemetery, in France.
Charles’ younger brother, Stanley Joseph, also served in the war. He was killed on 6 November 1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele, and his body was not recovered. Stanley Joseph Staples is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, in Ypres, Belgium.
