Benjamin Halstead was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England, on 2 April 1888. He was Jacob and Susannah Halstead’s third child.
Halstead immigrated to Canada in 1913. His wife, Dora, arrived the following year. It is unclear when they married. A farmer, Halstead enlisted in the 9th Canadian Mounted Rifles in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on 29 December 1914. He left for England nearly a year later.
Halstead was posted to serve with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles in France on 8 February 1916. In April, he was hospitalized with trench fever for just under a month. He rejoined his unit near the end of May 1916.
Halstead was wounded and taken prisoner during the Battle of Mount Sorrel, in June 1916. He was imprisoned in Germany until 23 November 1918. Repatriated to England, he was admitted to hospital with influenza in December 1918 and died the following January.
