William Reid was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 1 October 1882.

Reid worked as a machinist before joining the military. He enlisted in the 14th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment) in Montréal, Quebec, on 14 August 1915.

Reid died in France on 26 September 1916, during the Battle of Thiepval Ridge, when the 14th Battalion launched an assault to take Sudbury and Kenora trenches. Although the battalion successfully captured its objectives, it was severely mauled by heavy shelling and machine gun fire during the assault and the ultimately unsuccessful attempt to hold Kenora Trench.

William Reid is buried in Courcelette British Cemetery, in France.
