James Timmons was born in Montréal, Quebec, on 15 May 1890 or 1891 (the year varies on his records).
Timmons enlisted in the 60th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Canadien-Français), Canadian Expeditionary Force, in his hometown on 30 June 1915 and was discharged after nine months for unknown reasons. On 20 May 1916, he re-enlisted in Montréal, in the 199th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Duchess of Connaught's Own Irish Canadian Rangers). He was later transferred to the 24th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Victoria Rifles of Canada).
Timmons died at No. 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station on 6 November 1917, from wounds he received during the Battle of Passchendaele. According to his battalion’s war diary, the day Timmons died and the following night, the battalion experienced continuous shelling as it held the line.
James Timmons is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, in Belgium.
