Edward Richard Munday was born in Acton, London, England, on 11 May 1887. He was the second of Edward and Sarah Munday’s nine children. His father was a sewing machine agent. The family immigrated to Canada in 1905 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Munday was a bookkeeper when he enlisted in the Fort Garry Horse at Camp Hughes (formerly Sewell Camp), in Manitoba, on 8 October 1915. He later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was based at Yarmouth, England. On 5 August 1918, Munday went on a hostile aircraft patrol, flying an Airco DH.9 with the serial number D5802. He never returned.
