John Cameron Hume-Storer was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 22 October 1883. It is not known when he immigrated to Canada.
An engraver before the war, Hume-Storer was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Canadian Army Service Corps at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, on 22 September 1914. He joined the No. 1 Divisional Train in France on 15 January 1916 and was promoted to captain on 24 January 1916. On 20 July 1916, Hume-Storer was transferred to the Canadian Training Depot headquarters for duty with the Royal Flying Corps. He became a flying officer on 29 December 1916.
A member of the Home Defence Wing, Hume-Storer was reported missing on 17 February 1917, after he failed to return from an aerial patrol between Dover and Ramsgate, England.
