John Wilbert Vanatter was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on 19 November 1884.

A telegraph operator, Vanatter enlisted in the 173rd Canadian Infantry Battalion in his hometown on 16 February 1916. He was later transferred to the 52nd Canadian Infantry Battalion (New Ontario).

On 17 April 1917, Vanatter died of multiple gunshot wounds at No. 18 Casualty Clearing Station, in Lapugnoy, France.

John Wilbert Vanatter is buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, in France.
