Dirk Sol was born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, on 24 May 1879.

Sol stated that he was a sailor when he enlisted in the 16th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Canadian Scottish) at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, on 7 September 1914. He sailed to England as a member of the First Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 3 October 1914. After training on Salisbury Plain for four months, the Contingent was shipped to France in February 1915.

Sol died in Belgium on 22 April 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres, and his body was lost.

Dirk Sol is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, in Ypres, Belgium.
