John Joseph Brown was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 19 June 1880.
Although his attestation paper specifies that he was a labourer and that he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) on 23 August 1915, documents suggest that he was a career soldier and had served in the RCR since 1905. These documents also show that Brown served in the RCR’s Bermuda garrison from 14 September 1914 to 13 August 1915.
The RCR was shipped to England after it left Bermuda. The regiment sailed from Halifax on 28 August 1915 on SS Caledonia and arrived in Plymouth on 9 September 1915. After training and preparation, Brown embarked for France with the RCR in November 1915.
Brown was reported wounded and missing on the first day of the Battle of Mount Sorrel, 2 June 1916. On 21 May 1917, Canadian military authorities deemed that, for all official purposes, Brown was presumed to have died on or after 2 June 1916.
John Joseph Brown is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, in Ypres, Belgium.
