Walter Waldron Elliott was born in Norwood, Ontario, on 13 May 1896. He was the youngest of Robert and Lucy Elliott’s four children.
A farmer, Elliott enlisted in the 39th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Peterborough, Ontario, on 26 February 1915. After initial training in Canada, the battalion was shipped to England on 17 June 1915, arriving on 3 July 1915. Elliott was promoted to the rank of lance corporal soon afterwards. On 31 October 1915, he was transferred to the 25th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Nova Scotia Rifles), and he joined the unit in France two days later. On 14 June 1916, Elliott was promoted to corporal. He died on 30 September 1916 at No. 9 Casualty Clearing Station from wounds he received during the Battle of the Somme.
