Writing Desk
Writing home to friends and relatives was a
popular pastime.
ommunication up and
down the river was good but not fast. Horse drawn scows, either
open or with a tent, carried everything from domestic animals to
sewing needles as part of the mail delivery. The trusty canoe
could also serve as a mail boat. With members and guests
sometimes staying almost two months during the June and July
salmon fishing season, sending post cards or notes home was
popular. Since fishing was done in the morning and the early
evening, afternoons were free for writing and relaxing. Dinner
was sometimes served as late as 9:30 or 10:00 PM (E.S.T.).
