land, a home and several outbuildings. Normally, there would be
enough land to include a field for grazing animals and at least
one garden to grow enough root vegetables to last through most
of the winter. It was on this land and in these buildings that
the majority of the family's other possessions were stored and
used. A significant number of items, however, were used away from
the premises; near and on the water, and in the woods and open
country.
