In August 2005, Canadian forces deployed to Kandahar to help the Afghan
government extend its authority to the area. This commitment led to fierce clashes with
Taliban militants.
THE BATTLE OF PANJWAI AND BEYOND
A resurgence of the Taliban in the spring and summer of 2006 led to extensive and
sustained combat operations, unlike any seen by Canadian soldiers since the Korean War.
The most intense fighting was in the Panjwai district, 25 kilometres from Kandahar, used
by insurgents as a staging area for attacks on coalition forces.
