The Canadian infantry landing ships HMCS Prince Henry and HMCS Prince David formed part of the Allied invasion force for Operation Dragoon, the August 1944 landings in the south of France. Both ships were designed to carry invasion troops and to operate and maintain a flotilla of eight landing craft to transport them to the beaches. Barge-like landing craft line both sides of the ship, supported by the large davits (cranes) to hoist them into and out of the water.
