Canadian Landing Craft, Île du Levant

Canadian landing craft from the infantry landing ship HMCS Prince Henry unload on the Île du Levant, off the French coast in August 1944.

A Landing Craft, Mechanized (LCM) delivers a jeep and other equipment (left), while three Landing Craft Assault (LCA) carry less bulky cargoes (right). After delivering members of the joint Canadian-American 1st Special Service Force early in the morning of 15 August, Prince Henry's landing craft returned with these much-needed supplies and equipment. The photograph also emphasizes the island's rough terrain and the small, rocky landing beaches, which caused problems when unloading supplies and personnel.
