The Gulf War

In 1990-1991, as the Cold War was ending, the navy played a central role in Canada's involvement in the United States-led international coalition that ousted Iraqi forces under Saddam Hussein from Kuwait.

The Canadian government created the Gulf and Kuwait Medal to recognize Gulf War service by members of the Canadian Forces.

Potential recipients include those serving with the Canadian naval taskforce who took part in or directly supported operations against Iraq during the Gulf War. A bar with a maple leaf attached to the ribbon indicates service in the theatre of operations during hostilities. Of the 4,447 medals awarded since June 1991, 3,195 have included the bar.
